Some brands of mouthwash include ingredients that whiten teeth and freshen breath. As with all products, you should talk with your dentist before using a mouthwash, to make sure that it is suitable for you. When selecting a mouthwash, always look for the American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance. That seal indicates that the product meets the ADA’s standards for safety and effectiveness.

Not all mouthwash products do the same thing. Cosmetic mouthwashes freshen your breath, but have no medicinal value. Others contain ingredients for whitening your teeth. Therapeutic mouthwashes are designed to fight cavities, plaque and tartar; and gum disease. Based on your situation, your dentist can recommend a mouthwash for you, and can tell you if some other treatment is needed to address bad breath.
